Incipio DermaSHOT Case for the Storm 2 Review

The Incipio dermSHOT Silicone Case for the BlackBerry Storm 2 (9520/9550) is a simple, skin-like protective case made of high-density, tear-resistant silicone. I'm not a big fan of silicone cases being that they tend to provide relatively limited drop protection. I am a clumsy person and therefore require a case that can protect from serious abuse. The dermaSHOT was designed for users who want simple, low-profile protection from minor drops and scratches without installation hassles and bulk that heavy-duty cases incur.

My first impressions of the case when removing it from the original packaging were that of any other silicone-style case: not so impressive. However, after I handled the case for a few minutes, I began to realize just how great it felt in my hands with the anti-static coating as well as the obvious durability of the material. The included viewing stand was also a welcome feature as I do a lot of reading on my Storm 2.

Many silicone-style cases are simply just thicker versions of their thin, skin cover relatives; providing scratch protection and improved grip. Don't get me wrong, skin cases have their place. It's all a matter of user preference. Heavy-duty cases bring added bulk and complicated installation routines that many users don't want. Incipio created the dermaSHOT for Storm 2 users that fit that profile.

The dermaSHOT is probably not the best case if you are looking for protection from serious abuse. It is, however, quite capable of keeping your Storm 2 cushioned from minor drops and safe from scratches. The case is thin, flexible, and very light. As stated before, the coating on the exterior of the dermaSHOT provides a great feel and slips in and out of pockets with ease.

Installation of the dermaSHOT is a trivial matter. Simply slip it over the Storm 2. The case stays put but could be a little tighter-fitting. The sides of the case are a bit loose and tend to move around while handling the Storm 2, exposing the sides of the device. All port openings lined up perfectly, including the camera features. The buttons on the Storm 2 are pressed through the case and remain protected.

The touchscreen is fully-functional and otherwise unobstructed. I did notice (again) that the somewhat flimsy sides of the case were easily pushed out when sliding my thumb across the touchscreen. Not a big deal, but somewhat annoying.

Drop protection from minimal heights is sufficient with the dermaSHOT and the anti-static coating, although smooth to the touch, does provide extra grip. Incipio has also included screen protection with the dermaSHOT. The screen film installed easily and fit just right over the touchscreen. A micro-fiber cloth is also included for clean installation of the screen film.

The silicone material of the dermaSHOT is very durable. I actually tried to tear it without success implying that the dermaSHOT will last for a while. The video stand comes as a separate piece meaning you have to lug it around with you. However, it is very useful, especially on the nightstand.

In summary, the dermaSHOT touts a very innovative design considering it is a simple, silicone case style. The durability and extremely comfortable finish make this case stand out from other silicone cases and the handy stand is a convenient addition. The dermaSHOT is compatible with the BlackBerry Storm 9520 and 9550 models and comes in several color to suit your style including Red, Blue, Purple, Magenta, and Black.

Review of the Incipio Feather Case for BlackBerry Storm 2

The Incipio Feather case for the BlackBerry Storm 9520/9550 is a simple, snap-on design with an ultra-light, yet sturdy material that adds very little weight and thickness to your device. The Feather is perfect for Storm 2 users who want to to cover their device with a protective case that is inconspicous and light and lightweight. The Feather stands out with the addition of a handy stand for viewing your Storm 2 horizontally (great for nightstands).

The Feather's outer texture is soft to the touch and has a smooth surface that makes pulling your Storm 2 from pockets easy. The strong, polymer shell is less than 1mm thick according to Incipio's spec sheet, translating to a very low profile. Other than the enhanced feel and colorful paint job (I liked the red Feather which contrasted perfectly against the Black finish of my Storm 2), I could barely tell that the Feather was there. Incipio has truly achieved a super-light/low-profile design with the Feather.

As far as installation of the Feather, it is a relatively straight-forward process. Simply snap the case on over your Storm 2. All of the Storm 9520/9550 buttons, ports, and camera are fully accessible via precisely located cutouts in the Feather's body. The cutouts are recessed, which helps your fingers locate the controls easier and prevents accidental button pushes when handling your Storm 2. The touch screen and lower function keys on the front of the Storm 2 remain fully accessible and are completely unobstructed when the Feather is installed.

The appearance of the Feather, depending on the color you choose, can range from a casual Black to vibrant Red. Blue and Magenta colors are available as well. The finish, as I mentioned earlier, is smooth and comfortable to the touch. Screen protection is included with the Feather in the form of two, clear films that are self-adhesive. This extra bonus is especially important with the big, and somewhat exposed display that the Storm 2 has. The included stand comes as a separate piece (not attached to the case) and your Storm 2 simply rests in it for horizontal viewing. I find this very functional for use on the nightstand, when I use my Storm 9550 as an alarm clock.

In summary, the Feather is a very simple and functional design that looks good, feels good, and adds very little bulk to the Storm 2. There are cases out there that will provide more thorough protection, but if your looking for a case that will provide cushion for minor drops and bumps without adding much bulk to your Storm 2 and a complicated installation/removal routine, the Feather is the case for you.
